During WWII, many chocolate factories were either forced to shut down or were bombed leaving very little standing. In order to save these articles of history some molds were buried so as not to be melted down for the use of their metal content, or were lost to the ravages of war. Chocolate was first consumed for its medicinal purposes. It wasn’t until the mid 1600s, chocolate houses began to open, in London (1657), Germany (1673), and later Italy (1720). Just think of the cobbled streets of European villages long ago where the windows of the fine local chocolate shops were filled with the artistic work of the local chocolatiers enticing everyone who walked by, to come step inside. These molds are a snapshot in time, whether it be Santas, rabbits or other figurines. RARE ANTON REICHE, HORNLEIN, EPPELSHEIMER, VORMENFABRIEK, LE TANG, THIELEMANS AND MORE ANTIQUE / VINTAGE CHOCOLATE CANDY MOLDS WILL BE LISTED SOON, SO BE SURE TO FOLLOW ME! Without a stamped date on a chocolate mold it is difficult to know for sure how old the mold is. Before WWII molds were generally made from stamped sheet steel that was tinned by a tinsmith. Knowing what material was used to manufacture the mold is a good indicator of the time period the mold was produced. However, not all molds were marked with the manufacturers mark, catalog number, or even the # indicating the front and back pieces are a matched set. Some molds are determined by the font style alone, if a catalog number is found on them. Much more information can be found in publications of antique chocolate mould manufacturers. There has been no effort to restore any of the molds, so as not to compromise their essential value. Please see photos which depict the condition of the mold which show wear such as scratches, dents and marks, as these are your main point of reference for condition which are consistent with their age and prior use.
