This is a set of 4 old metal molds, in the style of card suits (heart, diamond, spades, clubs). Unsure of exact metal composition, but the molds are non-magnetic. They were likely made in the early 20th century (before WW2) or mid 20th century and are stamped “Made in Japan” on the back. They weigh approximately 10.5-11 ounces total and each measure 3 inches by 3 inches square by 0.25 inches deep. May originally have been used for candymaking (chocolate or hard candies), or perhaps soap molds. PLEASE NOTE: The metal is beginning to peel and crumble due to age, so they should only be used for display purposes. Also, some of the molds are slightly bent at the corners.

I was fortunate to visit a rather unique estate and brought home 3 car loads of items. Items found so far include ceramic pieces, ethnic items, Christmas, electronics (camera’s & radios), toys/ games, sewing items and just plain unusual items. The first is Father Christmas- this one is hinged – stands 6.25″ tall, and 3.5″ wide. Hinge moves freely, clips attached and work freely and are tight. Does show some minor patina or aging. The second is a Rare piece- Easter Bunny with basket- lots of Bunnies out there, ones that fit in the basket are more difficult to find. This mold is actually 4 pieces with the four original clips. It is also in excellent condition with some minor wear. Stands about 8″ tall with the basket, bunny is 6″, basket measures about 5″ x 4″. Antique Caged Hinged Easter Bunny Rabbit Candy Chocolate Mold 5 Five 18″x7″x2. A fabulous piece which would make a great display piece or could be used to make some fabulous chocolate Easter Bunnies! I have given this item an initial overall cleaning and insides of molds look very good but are not perfect. Please see photos for details of condition. What you see is what you get. The Easter Bunny (also called the Easter Rabbit or Easter Hare) is a folkloric figure and symbol of Easter, depicted as a rabbit-sometimes dressed with clothes-bringing Easter eggs. Originating among German Lutherans, the “Easter Hare” originally played the role of a judge, evaluating whether children were good or disobedient in behavior at the start of the season of Eastertide, similar to the “naughty or nice” list made by Santa Claus. As part of the legend, the creature carries colored eggs in its basket, as well as candy, and sometimes toys, to the homes of children. As such, the Easter Bunny again shows similarities to Santa (or the Christkind) and Christmas by bringing gifts to children on the night before a holiday. The custom was first mentioned in Georg Franck von Franckenau’s De ovis paschalibus (‘About Easter eggs’) in 1682, referring to a German tradition of an Easter Hare bringing eggs for the children.
