This is a beautiful antique hinged chocolate mold featuring a large standing Easter bunny. Measuring approximately 9 inches tall and weighing 3.2 pounds, this mold is made of heavy tinned steel, not lightweight aluminum, indicating it is an early piece likely from the late 19th or early 20th century. The mold includes its original hinge and clips, and features fine detailing on the rabbit’s fur and face, showcasing superb craftsmanship. It has a wonderful aged patina and authentic surface wear consistent with age. This mold would make a stunning addition to any vintage kitchenware, candy mold, or Easter decor collection. Very early super rare chocolate candy mold. It is unbranded except for the number 4601. The metal is copper. Notice the copper colored edge coloring and the green spotting in places. It is not affected by a magnet. Research shows that candy molds were made out of copper mostly from the 1840’s until around 1910. They were often flashed or coated with silver or tin to more readily separate the candy from the mold. My guess is this one is silver-flashed based. A plain cottonball shines it up with effort and the tarnish readily shows as blackish on the cottonball. The clip is made of steel. The hare measures almost 8 1/4 long. The mold measures another inch wider. The malleable copper edges are bent and wavy. See pics with close-ups for best description.
